Kerala to have 10
IT parks by 2011
The hub-and-spoke model of development being undertaken
in Kerala's information technology sector will enable
the state to equip itself with over 10 IT parks at various
destinations by 2011.
According to Ajaykumar, Secretary, Information Technology,
Kerala, "the the hub-and-spoke model of development
will have Kerala equipped with over 10 IT parks across
the state by 2011 with state-of-the-art technology available
for major IT/ITES companies to make Kerala a preferred
IT destination".
He was speaking at a function that marked the beginning
of the second phase of expansion at the Infopark in
Kochi. Continuing with the expansion of the Infopark
in Kochi, work on a new IT complex has been kick started
with the Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthandandan laying
the foundation for a state-of-the-art building on the
IT park premises. This marked the beginning of the second
phase of expansion of Kochi Infopark.
The CM laid the foundation for the new IT building
to be christened Athulya and the Budget Guest House
at a function organized at Infopark. The Athulya complex
has been planned as a state-of-the-art complex with
a built-up area of 5.5 lakh sq.ft.
Ajaykumar added that the start of the second phase
of expansion of Infopark also should be seen as a curtain
raiser to a series of launch events that the state would
witness over the next few weeks aimed at achieving a
step improvement in scaling the state's IT infrastructure.
"Athulya, Infopark's new SEZ space, would benefit
all segments of companies with its state-of-the-art
infrastructure and smart incubation facilities,"
he added.
The IT Secretary said the new phase at the Kochi Infopark
will attain the status of a strategic destination for
IT-ITeS investment in the state.
"Infopark Kochi is part of the hub-and-spoke model
of development planned by the state where Technopark
Thiruvananthapuram, Infopark Kochi and Cyberpark Kozhikode
will act as hubs with various spokes being developed
under these hubs," he added.
Kerala today boasts of an envious position with nearly
zero rural-urban differentiation. This is the only state
in India that has three international airports to its
credit with the fourth on the anvil in Kannur, it was
pointed out.
The sea connectivity is also commendable with the established
Kochi port and upcoming Vizhinjam port.
The Internet and broadband connectivity in the state
is an added advantage that has been favourable for Kerala.
With these advantages, it will be a matter of time
when Kerala will develop as the chosen IT destination
in India. Companies who have set shop in the state are
already lauding the great atmosphere and facilities
provided for them by Kerala to run their business smoothly
and in providing a quality life for their employees,
Kerala IT officials said.
