Telecom City to come up near Technopark

Along with Information Technology, the LDF Government is all set to explore the potential and opportunities in the telecommunication sector which has been witnessing a major growth in the country.

The Telecom City, which was announced by the State Government a couple of years ago, is coming up in the 25-acre land adjacent to Technopark at Kazhakuttum in the state capital.

The Kerala Small Industries Development Corporation (SIDCO), after having received the mandatory clearances from the Centre, is initiating steps to invite global tender for the project.

``We have prepared the tender documents and it’s pending clearance from the State Government. The project is expected to be made operational within three years once the bids are invited and it would be completed in five years, ‘’ said SIDCO managing director Saji Basheer. The project will be developed on a build-operate-transfer (BOT)-basis.

The BOT period will be 55 years, including five years for construction.

A project company in the form of a special-purpose-vehicle, with 26 percent share by the SIDCO and 74 percent by the successful bidder, would be formed.

The authorised share capital of the project company shall be Rs 100 crore, of which the share of SIDCO will be Rs 26 crore. SIDCO managing director will be the chairman of the project company.

``A total investment of Rs 400 to 450 crore is expected at the proposed project.

It is also expected to generate about 40,000 employment opportunities, ‘’ he said.

While 60 percent of the total built-up area will be earmarked for operational purposes and the remaining 40 percent would be for business support systems.

The project is expected to attract telecom and electronic equipment manufacturing units, telecom operations and service providers, embedded and software application providers, BPO units as well as IT service providers.

Business support facilities like premium segment hotels, international convention centre, residential facilities, shopping malls, food courts and recreation facilities would be also offered at the proposed Telecom City.

The state government has handed over 25 acres of land at Menamkulam village at Kazhakuttum where the Kerala State Salicylates and Chemicals (KSSC) was situated to SIDCO for setting up the Telecom City.

The KSSC has been defunct for the last several years.

The Indian Telephone Industries, Bangalore will technically support SIDCO in the venture. Unlike other similar projects, the Telecom City will not have special economic zone status.``We are not seeking SEZ status as we are mainly targeting domestic market- oriented companies and not exportoriented ones, ‘’ said Saji Basheer.
